Any FitSync users in San Diego?

How about ones that go to the SDSU Arc?

I'm a community member trying to get back into the gym habit.

Thanks,

Charles

Charles Welcome!  I don't live in sunny San Diego but wanted to say hi.  Post your workout widget so we'd know what you've been up to Cheesy

Thanks, Sister of Kong, for saying hello!

I'm not quite sure how to post the cool widget's on my profile like you have, but I'll play with it.

I sure do miss DC.  I moved from there before coming west.  I lived at Woodly Park (among other areas) not to far from Van Ness.
I hope you are loving life in the National Capitol and taking advantage of all DC has to offer.
I'm learning to appreciate it more when I'm away then where it weas home.

I would have senta  provate message ut havn't figured that out yet either!   Cheesy

Thanks,

Charles

Hey Charles I just posted some thoughts on the PT scheduling for you.

You should try the online rankings if you'd like some competition and motivation and can't find a workout buddy in sunny beautiful San Diego.  Paul from DC and David from Chicago have a bodyweight squats battle going on so jump in (literally) or just try some of the other stuff and rank yourself against some of the other standards.  Or if there's something you're really good at go for the record!

Check it out - its all bodyweight and age/gender ranked so big old powerlifters like me don't have any kind of advantage and get our butts kicked by women who can do more crunches or run faster.  I've been bugging the FitSync guys to put in some lifting rankings like deadlifts, squats, and bench press.  Now THAT's something I could kick some butt in! but just don't ask me to do any pullups  Grin

Thanks again, Rock, Rankings sound like a great idea. And it sounds like good motivation too.

I didn't realize it was age and weight ranked.  That's very smart.  I just wish it could recognise my body fat weight and not compare me against someone with big muscles and low fat.  Cheesy   Oh well.

I'll definitely look into it.  And thanks again with the scheduling software advice.

Welcome, Charles-
Saw that you used to live in Van Ness in DC - I workout at the Golds Gym there when I'm in town.  Cherry Blossoms just finished up and the Pope is in town so lots of action.  Regardless, I wouldn't mind trading you for some of that San Diego weather and the "marine layer" you get every morning.

Thought I'd give you some clarification on the structure of the rankings - Rock's mention of "bodyweight" refers to the type of exercises and not the weight of the participant.  Rankings are based on age and gender in a variety of exercises using only your bodyweight as resistance.  Bodyweight exercises serve as an equalizer because the bigger you are the more bodyweight mass you need to push (or pull) so it really emphasizes your strength relative to your own body.

Think of power to weight ratios in vehicles - a big truck (Rock, I'm not calling you a big truck so don't kill me) might make over 500 horsepower, weigh 20 tons, and take 5 minutes to get up to 60mph.  Conversely, a hot streetbike (like a Honda 600) might make only 100 horsepower but weighs 450 lbs and can hit 60mph in under 4 seconds.

Rock is exactly correct that even though he can probably deadlift a Toyota (or a Ford), Suzy Q who's about one third his size and can barely deadlift a wheel on that Toyota can probably do more crunches, pushups and pullups than Rock or at least give him a run for his money (assuming Suzy's been working out a little).

At the end of the day you're competing with yourself so get out there, chip away at your goal, watch your progress and most important - have fun!

Thanks for your message, Paul.

Boy, you sure make me miss DC.  Sorry I missed the Cherry blossoms.  I used to work downtown and the site of the blossoms around the tidal basin was stunning - even for the hardcore and jaded policy wonks like me  Grin

I'm happy to share the glorious San Diego weather; you sound like you are more than just passingly familiar with it.  Were you stationed here at one point?

Thanks for the clarification about the ranking and bodyweight.  Your analogy was helpful.

Right now I'm focused on getting up at 4 to get to the gym and workout by 4:30 AM!  Yikes

Thanks again,

Charles

Up at 0400?  Definitely hardcore and a great energy boost throughout the day.  That schedule makes it easy to hit the rack early each night instead of vegging on the couch watching mindless TV.  Stick with your program and you'll be successful.

Spent some time at Coronado a while back and have many fond memories of early morning swims and runs and watching the marine layer burn off to reveal a clear sky and bright sun.  Each morning like clockwork we had some mist and haze but by mid-morning it blows through and then a perfect day.  You are fortunate to live in such a nice part of the country.

Last time I was there was for the 95 America's Cup and unfortunately saw Young America lose to New Zealand (Black Magic or Kiwi Magic? - can't remember) but otherwise a great visit.  Hope to get back soon.

Good luck with your program and definitely use the rankings as a source of motivation to measure your success.  Old African proverb says you can eat an elephant one bite at a time so keep chipping away at it and soon you've leaned down, feel better, and can knock out 50 pushups without breaking a sweat!
