Author Topic: HTC xv6800 - Windows Mobile 6.1 - Successful Install! Application MIA  (Read 4885 times)
Peter

« on: 18-Jan-09, 07:48:44 PM »

On my Verizon HTC xv6800 running Windows Mobile 6.1, I am able to use the wireless internet to navigate to the fitsync.com/install page, download the installer, install it to device memory, see the installer icon, launch it, install all 3 components including the 2 SQL and FitSync launcher while bypassing the .Net 1.0 and "these application versions are for an earlier OS" messages, and finish successfully.  Then, i can do it all over again, but nothing more as the installer remains, but the resulting program is never listed as available.  I am running .NET 3.5 and have tried a soft reset.

When you complete the install you should see a FitSync icon on the main programs screen of your device.  I suggest you try doing a reinstall of the FitSync app.

Couple of general tips:

Installer - the installer will only run once after you download it so when you do a reinstall you need to start fresh and download the installer again.

Internet Access and Networks - Some operators run their phone and Wi-Fi hotspot networks through proxies or otherwise filter the connection which can muck up the download of some files.  If you have problems with install we recommend downloading the installer via ActiveSync or via Wi-Fi connection not affiliated with the mobile operator.

Try this:

1 - Go into Remove Programs (Start, Settings, System, Remove Programs) and remove the FitSync Installer, FitSync Workout tracker, MS SQLCE 2.0 and MS SQL Client.

2 - Download the installer to your device, not the storage card.

3 - Run the installer and install to device, not the storage card.  You can ignore the "app version is for earlier OS..." - that just means we haven't optimized for landscape mode.

4 - Go to Programs and you should see the FitSync icon.  If you don't see it, go into Remove Programs to see if all 3 components got installed.

Give this a shot and give us an update on your progress.  We have a lot of users on the XV6700 (HTC) through Verizon, Sprint and others but have received reports that the phone network is a little squirrely for downloading the installer but once installed syncs fine.

Thank you for the quick response!  I have followed your removal instructions and then again attempted the installation with a fresh installer.  I have found that both SQL modules are listed in the Remove Programs listing as well as is the installer, however the tracker software is not listed at all nor available in the programs.  I would be happy to attempt a download and transfer via ActiveSync.  Do you have a download link that will allow me to do this?

It sounds like the install isn't completing for some reason.  For an ActiveSync install, you go through the same process but you're connecting to the Internet via your desktop's net connection instead of Wi-Fi or phone network, etc.  The objective is to ensure you have a clean connection.

Establish an ActiveSync connection (make sure your Wi-Fi is off so you don't pick up a Wi-Fi connection), launch the browser on your handheld, and then go to http://fitsync.com/install to download the installer.

Ok, well I found out that to allow the browsing through activesync, I need to navigate to: start, setting, connections, usb to pc and uncheck enable advanced network functionality

So, I did so and downloaded the installer successfully, repeated the process, and had the same result.  The FitSync Tracker still does not show up in the Remove Programs, Programs Listing, or any Program Files directory though the installer still indicates a successful install.

OK, tell me about your device.  Did you get it from Verizon?  Have you checked to see if there are any patches or updates available for your device?

There's a remote possibility that Verizon has disabled some features on your device which could be blocking the install.  They used to do this a few years ago on devices.  We have a very large customer base in Asia running HTCs so not a compatibility problem with the HTC (in Asia they call it the Mogul).  You might also check to make sure you have sufficient free space on your device but my bet is that Verizon is running a non-standard implementation of Windows that is somehow screwing things up.

Could be!  It is a Verizon branded xv6800 which translates to a HTC Titan.  It is showing a ROM version of 3.57.605.1 dated 7/21/08.  There is 64MB of onboard RAM with a 256MB Flash and a model #TITA100.  It is running Windows Mobile 6.1 and indicates a hardware version of 0003.  The OS also reports itself as CE )S 5.2.19212 (Build 19212.1.0.3).  I hope that that info helps and thank you again for your assistance.

This really had me puzzled as our app runs fine on the Asia and Europe TyTN as well as the Verizon and Sprint XV6700 (HTC Apache) so I did some digging.  Looks like Verizon is blocking any apps on the XV6800 that they (Verizon) have not digitally signed.  This means that it's not just FitSync but a lot of other common apps won't work either.  Really a pain when carriers do this but the good news is that most others (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) are wide open like Asia and Europe and let you install anything you wish (like the Notre Dame fight song!).

Let me do some more digging to see if there's a workaround.  Appreciate your patience.

Thanks, so much, John!  I couldn't be happier with the level of response and customer support from your organization.  I am certain to recommend it to my friends and family.

Hey Peter, another user who was having problems similar to yours just solved it by installing the NET Compact Framework v3.5 that was just released by Microsoft so you might give that a try.  Let us know if it solves the problem.

Here's the link to the downloads page at Microsoft:

Here's a good explanation of how to install on your device from MSDN forums:

When I download from the mobile link onto my Palm Treo 750 (pocket pc/windows) , I only see a link that says PalmOS prc install. I have been looking to see if I can find any other link and reloading the page to see if I am missing anything. I did download the file and asks where to save it... then nothing. No install, message or anything- When I go to the location and click on the FitSync.prc, the error message is that there is no application associated with this file & to open the application instead of this file. I am thinking it should be a cab instead of prc?

You're absolutely right, Stephanie; you should be getting a cab and not a .prc file.  We've been doing some upgrades and updating the device detect functionality to make sure the correct installer is served up for each device.  Everything is now completed so give it a try now and you should get the correct installer.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! The mobile site worked perfectly. I did download it to my device (not the card) and on install got the message about missing the netcf.all.wce4.armv4.cab file. I am going to remove it from my phone and try again just to make sure I did do it correctly... Undecided

You can ignore the message about the missing netcf etc. and proceed with the install. You might also check to see if you need any updates or patches - MS released this update about a month ago:

One more tip - on some devices you can only run the installer once after download so to play it safe, delete the old installer and download it fresh before running it.
